An Ancestor of Granger

An article in the San Antonio Evening News on 9/18/1920 written by a George Huntress who was the manager of a local baseball club called the Lone Star Motor Truck and Tractor Company Baseball Club. In it he was bragging that his club was the best in San Antonio and all other teams trembled before them.

BE IT KNOWN to all latter day aspirants
to the city baseball title, that
the Lone Star Motor Truck and Tractor
Baseball Club doesn't intend to accept
challenges from now to kingdom
come, from the vast and sundry clubs
In this, our grand and glorious city,
especially when these said aspirants
cannot be recognized as rightful, and
worthy contenders.......

There was more but it was almost unreadable from the fiching done before it was scanned into a pdf file.

Granger was this your Grandfather or great uncle?

PS ... Congrats are in order to Granger's Alma Mater, the Mules of Alamo Heights High School. Soccer team plays for the state title today in Georgetown ... also, the OC at Alamo Heights was named the new Head Football Coach during the week (the old coach, Don Byrd, who won the 2006 UIL championship retired and took the HFC job at San Antonio Central Catholic).

he is (but not sure how), but actually it goes back even farther... I have a photo from 1890 of the San Antonio Jokers and their manager is none other than Frank Granger Huntress. A friend of mine discovered it in a memorabilia collection he was buying and called me. There is a book entitled, Brochos to Spurs: Sports in San Antonio since 1888 by Chris Foltz. It actually mentions the Jokers as the dominant amateur team in the area that became semi-pro. I will try to upload it, as it is awesome.

As for the Mules, I am excited for them. My brother was on the JV the year they won state in 87. Of course I was about to graduate from college. One of the guys from that team actually lives down the road from me here.

Sorry I have been out of touch for a bit. I had a rough spell at work, then caught the flu, despite getting a shot this year... I finally dropped my fever yesterday, so I am back in business.

Congrats again in order to our benefactor, Granger, and his alma mater for their 4A UIL Soccer title this weekend ... although it is a commie pinko sport.

(and here's some blackmail info against me ... my son, age 10, plays soccer in a city leage -- he played on a traveling team last fall -- and the blackmail is that I was roped into coaching his team a couple weeks ago, fortunately I don't believe any pictures of the act were taken. But I am lifetime 1-0 as a coach as we won 5-3).
