The Falcons held Annapolis and Living Stones at bay for the duration of each hour-long contest, even coming through with an impressive goal line stand that left Lifegate fans buzzing in the bleachers.
“Annapolis, which is the TCAL (Texas Christian Athletic League) state champs, got a long pass down to our one and we stuffed them four straight plays down there,” head coach John Rabon said. “We didn’t allow a score from the first two teams with our first- or second-stringers, so overall we did pretty well. In fact, as usually happens, we’re way ahead on defense right now.”
But the Falcon offense also had some highlights in the two scrimmages, totaling four total touchdowns — two rushing and two receiving. Despite those scores, however, Rabon says that his players also let some points slip right through their fingertips.
“We did okay,” Rabon said. “We didn’t score as much as we’d like, but we didn’t run that many plays — we ran about six or eight plays is all we ran. We dropped two or three deep touchdown passes and those are things that you misfire on sometimes.
“We’ll get there — we’re in a good spot.”
Freshman Jacob Swick and sophomore Jayson Mittelberg each hauled in scores for Lifegate on Saturday, while seniors Matt Akin and Caleb Tate each tallied rushing touchdowns for the Falcons.
But besides simply getting prepared for the upcoming season, the coach said that the scrimmage may have also given his team an advanced look at a potential opponent.
“Alvin Living Stones — there’s a chance we may see them in the playoffs because they had seven teams in their district and three of the teams folded,” Rabon said. “So they’ve got four and the top four go to the playoffs.
“(Annapolis and Living Stones are) both good, solid programs so it was good for us to play them.”
Having battled depth problems in the past, it was also a positive sign that Lifegate had 16 players suited up on Saturday. Of those 16, five were freshman, meaning that the Falcons are getting a head start on cementing the future of their program.
And even though there were some miscues by the youngsters, the coaching staff realizes that they need to soak up all the experience they can get.
“We’ve got some more to go, but the defense did a good job,” Rabon said. “(The offense) is behind the defense, but you expect that because there’s so much time left.”
Lifegate will host another scrimmage next Saturday morning, set to begin playing at around 9 a.m. Among the participants will be the San Marcos Area Christian Competitors (SMACC) Panthers — a second-year team featuring three players from Seguin and two from Kingsbury.
Following that contest, the Falcons will begin preparation for the 2010 season, which will kick off on Aug. 27 when Lifegate hosts the Christian Academy of San Antonio (CASA) at 5:30 p.m.
