Brad Brunson of Silverton is one of the coaches for the Cisco Lobos as they compete for the 2A Division II title today at Jerry's World. Brad was selected for the UIL's team. Go Lobos

36-35 Refugio final. Cisco held state scoring record holder to almost a win. Great job.

From what I've heard, probably 99% of Texas HS football coaches were rooting for Cisco; Refugio has a habit of running up the score ... you know, take a time out with 8 seconds left and a big lead and run some sort of razzle-dazzle play for another TD, type of running up the score.

Paybacks for that kind of attitude are a real biotch. What comes around will go around.

It will be hard cause this guy will not sit and stay for such. Interesting in that apparently his 7 man staff coach 7th, 8th, JV, and varsity. None of them teach class. Must be nice.

Gee, wonder what his staff was before Gov. Good Hair and the Republicans gutted education this year? I'm figuring that the Refugio ISD had to lay off their chauffers and housekeeping staff. (Sarcasm key now turned off...)

How do they get away with that? I thought all coaches had to be teachers by UIL rules.

obk ... They need to be full-time employees of the school district. As another poster wrote, their job is teaching football. Great work if you can get it.

Even in our 5A public high school, only the head football coach/AD does not have teaching duties (the assistants may only have 3 or 4 classes with one to three athletic periods or preparation/conference periods), but they don't need a GPS or a map to find a classroom.

Seriously, you want your coaches to be salaried employees of the district so you can pay them a stipend and get around overtime and per hour pay rules. For example, if you hire the janitor to be a coach, you can't pay him $x an hour for his regular job and $x total stipend for his coaching job; it has to be per hour (since the janitor job is a per hour job) for both janitor and coaching ... with time-and-a-half after 40 hours.
