Six Man Football Added in the Unlikeliest of Places

Lawrenceville School, a $54,000+ a year private boarding school in New Jersey, has adopted six-man football as the official format of its house football league. The house teams are fielded in addition to the schools' eleven-man varsity team. They are essentially intramural teams made up of players from your "house" or dorm that play other houses (think quidditch in Harry Potter).

Dating to 1888, the Lawrenceville house football league is considered the nation's oldest organized football league but has been suffering from dwindling numbers in the past few years. They've traditionally played eleven-man football but switched to eight-man as numbers kept dropping. Things came to a head in 2013, when the house league was switched to flag football. A huge alumni outcry followed and they determined to find a solution. The solution turned out to be six-man football. Each house will be allowed to field a team as long as they have at least ten boys come out.

A clip with some six-man action as Lawrenceville celebrated 125 years of house football in 2016.

6 Lawrenceville houses field six-man teams that play a 5 game season for intra-scholastic bragging rights.
