Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
From an article in the 10/26 1912 Galveston Daily News, the UT Austin varsity football team was preparing for a game teh next day with the Haskell HS Indians. Evidently UT played Haskell 9 times in 11 years from 1902-1912.

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
Sure would be neat to have a sign on the outskirts of Haskell:
All-time series wins ... Haskell High 5 UT 4
Maybe UT can set up a home-and-home to take a chance at getting the lead in the series.

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
I wonder if anyone in Haskell even knows they played UT back then? It's a certainty no one alive remembers it.

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
Back then, the local high schools had more money to recruit players than the colleges did.

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
Also, the average age of Haskell's starting 11 was probably higher than UT's.

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
You are probably right on both counts. When the UIL got really going in the 20's, a lot of schools got in deep doo-doo for recruiting and over-age players.

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
Texas can't have that many losing records to other schools. I'd be interested to know how many other schools besides Haskell has the overall upperhand on the Longhorns. ;)
EDIT
Just found a site... I only looked at those who have played a min. of 5 games. Only Miami (Fla.) and Penn State have gotten the better of Texas. Looks like the Indians are in some good company. LOL

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
I found another article in the 1909 Galveston Daily News, 10/17/1909 about the Haskell team playing A&M at A&M. An article in the 10/17/1909 San Antonio Light was on the Haskell-UT game - played at the State Fair in Dallas which they won 12-11 on a last minute fumble recovery run back for a TD.

The Indians sure got around in those days. An article in the 10/21/1909 Galveston Daily News had them losing to Baylor 12-0 in Waco.

I need to change the title of this thread. The Indians played Nebraska on Thanksgiving in Lincoln and beat them 16-5.

Haskell Indians vs. College Varsity Teams
I wonder if the school had a wealthy benefactor that helped them recruit?

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
I've got to do a little more research, but it looks like there was another Haskell Indians football team. There is a Haskell Indian School in Lawrenceville KS that ran a high school and 4 year college. I do know the articles in the papers did say Haskell High School. Maybe they were confused like I am (most of the time).

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
OK. Confirmed, It was the Haskell Indian School. from Lawrence KS.
I had never heard about this school. They played College football until the late 1930's and only resumed as a NAIA team in 1999. Between 1937 and 1999 they were a combination high school and junior college.

Re: Interesting Article on the UT Austin football team
that makes sense, there seems to only be about 500 small colleges in Kansas
