week 8 picks

Postby Blue Bird » Sat Oct 15, 2011 12:55 pm

The question in my mind is: Is Sidney healthy yet? And will Sidney have everyone healthy anytime during district? Makes a difference in my picks at least. I am thinking no this week and will pick accordingly.

Well Blue Bird I see Sidney having no chance to beat Gustine, even if they are healthy. I think this year that Sidney will be doing good just to finish third in this District. Sidney is back to what we used to know them as, they are that team that everyone wants for an easy game an automatic "W". I believe last year was just decent because they had kids that were there all the way through Williams' program. The program is falling off now. They don't have the same coaching and I dont think that they have the coaching to get back on top of this district anytime soon. They had a good ride but its over now. Gustine Takes the district!

Theoneandonly, Sidney, as many other schools near Sidney's size, tends to cycle competitive teams in and out about every 5 to 10 years. It takes two classes in high school at the same time, usually back to back, to have competitive depth so you can have injuries and still win. Ask Shannon sometime about how many games he won the first couple of years at Sidney. When he got those two classes back to back, he won his share of games. I guess my first point is talent level and talent depth will have more control over wins and losses than who the Coach is.

At Panther Creek, Sidney was ahead 14-6 when their SB/TB/MLB went down with a leg injury. Could they have went on to win that game with him playing? Who really knows, I don't. With Sidney's lack of depth a full game would have been hard. Will he get to play in any of the district games? Again, I don't know. If he does he probably won't be at 100%, not that he was at 100% in any of their games that he played in this year. At 100% he is a difference maker on the field. Last year Gustine fans hated getting beat by Sidney. That is normal. They also gave credit to this young man for being a "good" football player. That doesn't always happen.

Hey Oneandlonely Gustines had its rump kicked by Sidney lots of times through the years I did it myself several times and yes it was an easy win, We didnt know we were gonna have to play 6 on 7 meaning the ref and his bad calls we were on our way to another easy win over Gustine and still nearly got the job done that will teach us to take it easy on yall for the first half by the way Sidneys junior High had and easy win on thursday over Gustine looking forward to playing yall the next few years why dont you just forfeit .

Gustine is in for a rude awaking the next couple of years. Last year i witnessed the eagles beat gustine jr with 5 players yes gustine had all 6 in there aginst there 5 and lost bad. With that being said it go thur cycles there is a 5th and 4th grade class loaded with talent at gustine. Its just for the next couple of years gustine will struggle.

So, old34, are you saying that the Sidney Eagles Jr. High are pretty well loaded? And do you always have to have the refs on your side to win? Just a question I had after reading this topic.

Old 34, after re-reading your post very well, it seems that if you beat Gustine all by yourself in the past, you should be able to beat them and the refs with 6.

Blue Bird, those two classes did help Williams a lot, but he built a program in those two classes from the ground up. He started with nothing and built those classes up starting in junior high. And when that last class graduated and he left the program left. As I said before their success last year was just left overs. They may not have the talent that they had with the two big classes but their are some good ball players there and with the right coaching they could have been successful this year. They could have won that district. And you are right in small school number change and some classes just aren't that talented, but good coaches can continue those programs and keep building. I just don't see that happening with the coaching Sidney has now. I'll admit they surprised me in the gustine game, but injuries hurt them. That's were a good program puts a no losing attitude in there players no matter how many there are, they should go out knowing there going to win no matter what happens or what players go out. That kind of stuff can be coached into players and Williams did a good job of that with his players, but it's not there anymore. What he started is gone.
