I think leman was/is putting a stat sheet up. Looking in the standings over on the right hand side, it shows points allowed. I guess thats one way to measure. McLean has only given up 57 all season. Another team had only given up 50.

Numbers can't tell whole story though they have played some weak teams so it's hard to figure.

Instant gut reaction to this is McLean, probably might have been Coolidge before last night

After last night Mclean is only allowing 6 points per game and Garden city 11 points it makes sense they are ranked #1 and #2

I meant my instant reaction to the question without looking anything up either way.

Digging in a bit....

McLean gave up 18 to Strawn week 1 and Garden City gave up 23 to Strawn week 6

Most points given up by those two schools:
McLean = 18 to Strawn (week 1) and White Deer (week 9)
Garden City = 32 to Balmorhea (week 3) and 23 to Strawn (week 6)

and McLean held Balmorhea to 0 points the very next week after the Balmorhea GC game (week 4)

If the debate is whose defense is better McLean or GC's I think on paper it is easily McLean's

As for Coolidge: Before allowing a lot to Milford, they had only given up 69 points all season but with only 6 games played, including against Zephyr, Jonesboro and Calvert, all solid playoff teams.

Let's continue this debate a bit:

How about Strawn's defense? They held Garden City to their lowest point total all season, 34, in GC. AND McLean to their lowest point total all season (51), AND Milford to their lowest point total all season (46) all season, AND is the first team to shut out Borden County since 2013 (Water Valley)...all of those are DI top 10 ranked teams

Point being...there is a solid case to be made that Strawn's defense, even though they have lost 2 games, is the best defense in the state.

Without question I think Strawn and Mclean have the best defenses...oh and they are ranked #1 in their respective divisions as well...

worth noting is Whitharral has given up an average of 12.2 points a game and has played tough teams in Anton, Amherst, Paducah and Petersburg

Garden City also has a solid D without question

Iredell...let's take a look: I LOVE the Dragons and what coach Guereca has done there! They are the consensus #2 in DII for a reason. They are giving up 8.25 points per game which is awesome...but...who have they played? Unfortunately their week 8 game vs Milford was cancelled due to weather or we would have a solid measuring stick to see just how good their defense and the Dragons really are. Their best win is a 52-20 one over Jonesboro week 7

Let's look at average opponent ratings between those 6 schools I have mentioned thus far (though week 9):
Strawn: 494.645
Coolidge: 490.111666667
McLean: 485.50875
Garden City: 483.9225
Iredell: 436.942857143
Whitharral 399.844444444

Since this thread is about defense... Leman, or anyone else, I started a thread Friday night which has been buried with no responses asking about defensive TD's in a game. Strawn scored 5 (6 - one called back for holding) in a shutout that ended at the half. Are records kept for such? If not is anyone aware of a game where a team has scored more in a full game, something less, or one half?

Coolidge has the second best defense in the state and Milford hung 73 on them...
All other 6 teams they played COMBINED to scored 69 points.

Other than the top 3 in D1 Strawn is giving up 3.1 per game. 6, 7, 0, 6, 0, 0. This does include the shutout of last years D1 state champs.
