Post Nostalgia – Spirit Ribbons
http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1955-gatesville-buffalos-1963-spirit-ribbons-texas

The last time I saw a spirit ribbon was early 80's.

I wonder if it was someone on this board that won them???

"Buffaloes Make Cat Stew From the Tigers"
"Buck Buckholts" better then the alternative I suppose ;).

Who were the Vultures and the Beavers?

I love this stuff.

Possibly,

Falls City Beavers - South of San Antonio ? OBK ?
Also, I have a (Hurst) Red Raiders Kick the Mustangs spirit ribbon hanging here in my office. Any bids?

The last four years Turnersville was open, and someone had kept them for a long time. Guess they needed forty bucks.
Didn't find them playing any Vultures or Beavers on Lonestarfootball, but not all games are there.
Their last game was with the Tolar Rattlers. Don't see a ribbon for that one.

I just find that stuff interesting. Sometimes that stuff can be clues for people sorting out the past.

Post Re: Nostalgia – Spirit Ribbons
I kept a collection of the Gordon spirit ribbons from 1979 to the 1984 season. I bought two ribbons each week and put them on my blue jeans. When I got home after the games I would tack them to my wall in my bedroom. Each week the ribbons were standard size unless it was something special like homecoming. Either way I bought two each week.

I had a bad breakup with my girlfriend after I graduated and I was going away to college and wanted to get rid of a lot of memories. I tore all the ribbons off the wall and put them int he burning barrel. I pored some gas on them and threw a match in... whoosh, they were gone.

Looking back on doing that after all these years I wish I still had them. Did it teach the girlfriend anything by my doing that? Nope. The mistakes we make today we might regret tomorrow.

Side story. After playing a team, I think it was Moran, I found one of their ribbons on under the bleachers the next day. I kept it until the next year when I sold it to our new science teacher who had taught there at one time, he wore it for the game that year. I remember I charged him a HUGE sum for that ribbon, I think it was like $2.00 or something like that. LOL

Memories!!

Andy

Have you ever wondered why the school closed? Seems kind of odd to close after your football team had basically made it to the top.

They just didn't have enough students to keep it going.
There was a thread on here earlier where #51 posted an article about their closing.
It is about half way down the following page.

Most of the returning football players transferred to Jonesboro and kept it going. J-boro had some players of their own and really benefited. Interesting thread.

Speaking of spirit ribbons. Once I coached in eastern part of state. Had an adult who was quite a bit slow who was to be my manager. First game, he wears four spirit ribbons to pep rally. I really did not think anything about it, till the team ran out on the field and lo and behold who leads the team out, but the infamous manager. Ha Lots of stories about this individual, but the four spirit ribbons flying as he lead them out, still cracks me up. Ha

Now that's funny.
OBK, I'm even older than that. I had been gone 12 years when he got there.

'56-'57 school year so that would be only 11 calendar years, but 12 school years.
